I traveled abroad to Peru to get first-hand experience in teaching English, becoming fluent in Spanish, as well as getting a better idea of how I was going to apply my degree in the real world. As an adult student, I have always had to work while I went to school. I found it difficult to find opportunities for hands on experience in my field here in the United States aside from an internship and/or volunteering, which I also do. I made it happen on my own terms and I am winning for it!
This last year, I took some online classes at UNC Charlotte while I was still in Peru founding a Non-Governmental Organization with a community-based research participation component operating at its central core. I really want our organization to expand. I think it’s important to help others how they want, need and think is best for them to be helped, especially when it’s help coming from a high income nation like ours which has incredibly different socio-cultural characteristics in comparison.
